5 things I have forgotten since the eldest was a baby

When you find out that you are expecting for the second (or more) time, there is a massive part of you that thinks, oh I have totally done this before, I will be absolutely fine. There seems to be less niggling doubts than the first time round when everything was absolutely brand new, and at the start, I would say that you definitely feel more confident about being able to look after this new little person that you are about to bring into the world.

Ever since Oscar arrived, I have discovered that actually, I have forgotten A LOT! I know it's been four years since I went through this first time round and those of you with smaller age gaps may have a better memory, and I also know that a lot has changed in those four years, but seriously, I find myself googling stuff just as often as I did when Zach was a baby to remind myself of what is normal and what is not. Here is what I have forgotten.

1. Faeces
Yep – I am starting with poo! Black poo, green poo, bright orange poo. Poo with black bits in that look like worms and you are reminded that it's banana poo. No poo for days, poonamis that go everywhere. It's amazing how much about the poo that you forget – but then in all honesty, why would you want to remember it?!

2. Moving babies – once they go, they go!
Once that baby rolls, that's it. I don't remember having to be on guard quite so ruddy quickly – I totally forgot that once they master that art of rolling, they are simply rolling everywhere. Within days they have learnt that they can kind of shuffle to where they want to be by dragging themselves along using their elbows and they also can suddenly spin themselves around meaning that when you next look down, they are facing the complete other way!

3. Changing nappies becoming a mission impossible
Related to the rolling baby, I forgot that suddenly changing a nappy becomes an absolute ruddy nightmare. Gone are the days when they simply lie still on their changing mat. Suddenly you have a nappy half done up when they decide to roll. Or they use those strong little feet to lift their bums up just as you get the nappy under their bum! Nappy changes used to take seconds but now, with arms and legs flailing everywhere, it's a mission and a half! Oh and if you have a boy, there's also the battle with them grabbing their willy before you've managed to get a wipe there…messy!

4. Weaning
I have totally forgotten how to wean! It sounds silly right? But it's so true. I have been checking with Mr Google along the way when it comes to things like when to feed, what to feed. Should I be introducing water? Do I still just breastfeed as normal? How the hell do I fit it all into the day, pick a time when he's not wanting milk or sleep and try to occupy a four year old!

5. Teething
I simply have no recollection of it with Zach and had absolutely no idea what to do when Oscar started teething! After much advice, I headed straight to Boots and bought everything that my blog pals had recommended to me and then spent time wondering what one to use when and how often.

So there you have it. It just goes to show that even if you've had one or more babies already, when that next one comes along, there are still a million questions you reguarly ask yourself!

It all goes so quickly and in the midst of the sleep deprivation so much of it can be forgotten. Slow down time!

When I was recently pregnant I was already racking my brains trying to remember it all from the first time round with Lily. It seems like so long ago when in fact she's only just turned 2! I'd forgotten all about the nappy changes that take half an hour because they're on the move or that when you first start weaning it seems like fitting in three meals in just one day is a complete impossibility! Haha! xx

This is so true. Although I do find I just don't Google anymore. Little Mister H has a habit of letting me know what he needs and when. For me it feels really odd because he is a boy. Who knew that boys started becoming preoccupied with their willy at such a young age?! And even at nine months he is so much more physical than his sister ever was. He started crawling properly today and it is months sooner than Little Miss H started. Slow down babies. Slow down. Hugs Lucy xxxx

I'm rediscovering many of these now!! It's also strange how different children can be. I never had to battle to keep G from reaching down during his nappy changes (just chase him during the wriggling!) but B is eager to get his hands involved. So far I've avoided any messy situations but the wriggling is getting stronger so I'm scared it's just a matter of time haha! Xx
