This is a collaborative post
I wrote a post a couple of months back about how it was getting to the time when I need to start looking for a job for when my nine months of paid maternity leave comes to an end. We know that we don't need me to work full time anymore but I do need a steady income to make sure that I can cover some of the housely outgoings each month.
The job I am on maternity leave from is in no way family friendly as there is quite a bit of travelling involved and the commute is a fair distance. I was always late for work when I only had one child and come September, Zach will be in school (aaaargh) which makes everything even more complicated! So I started having a look around to see what there was available and crying inside about how it was all happening far too quickly. I mean, I swear that Oscar was only born weeks ago but he is now six months old. The end of May was speeding along and I wasn't happy about it!
I have been earning from my blog for a while now, bits and pieces here and there, and the majority of it has been put into my savings account. I have spent some of it on the blog for conferences, a laptop, a camera and when I have made these purchases, I have always checked whether there is a voucher code website doing any special deals to make sure I am paying the lowest price, as then I know I am saving the most money that I can. And so I had quite a healthy pot of money that I actually didn't know what I was going to do with.
Then one day, I was perusing through one of the many blogging Facebook groups that I am a member of and someone mentioned that every penny they made from their blog was going towards being able to take a full year of maternity leave – to see them through those last unpaid three months. Suddenly I had the same plan! I didn't quite have enough money though so at that point it was still very much a dream.
Then January happened. It was my most successful month of blogging yet and I suddenly had a bigger pot of money. It was time to mention my plans to the other half.
So, if I wanted to stay off for the whole year, would I basically have to cover what my maternity pay currently pays me?
The answer was yes.
And I was almost there. I had a little bit to go until I had enough money to see us through those three months.
And I've done it.
I just got paid for a couple of posts and I have hit my target. I can cover those unpaid months and I can now take the whole year of maternity. It gives me extra time to earn more money, extra time to think about what I need to do and extra time to make my plans. And of course, it gives me extra time with my two gorgeous boys.
My maternity leave officially ends at the end of August which means I get to be at home with the two of them through the whole of summer -something I really didn't think I would get to do. It also means I get to spend all of that precious time with Zach that I have before he starts his school adventure in September.
I am so proud of myself, and of this little blog, my little corner of the internet, providing me with such a wonderful opportunity. And fingers crossed it just keeps going!
