Our weekend happy – a birthday party, country walk (or two) and a brand new year!

OK I am cheating again this week because I am documenting a three day weekend. New Years Day totally counts as a weekend right? Although, before I start properly, I should probably fill you in on my news relating to these weekly posts.

When I went to the Mumsnet event a few months ago, the lovely Lucy from Mrs H’s Favourite Things asked me if I fancied collaborating and turning it into a linky. And so, very soon, there will be a linky and Instagram community so that you can join in and document your happy weekends on a weekly basis. I will share more information as soon as we have sorted it all!

So, onto our weekend.

Saturday, Zach had a birthday party to go to for one of his old nursery friend’s. The other half was feeling a bit poorly, the timing of it was bang in the middle of Oscar’s nap time, and so we decided that I would take Zach alone. Nothing quite went right in the lead up to it, Oscar woke up early, the other half tried to take him for a walk to get him back to sleep which didn’t work, I realised he had my purse on the buggy as we started to drive off so we had to go find him, and when we got to the party, Zach was all shy and didn’t want to take part. Thankfully, after some time, he perked up a bit and ended up having loads of fun!

On the way home, we took a little detour to Pets At Home to stock up on stuff for the rabbit and by the time we reached the house, the other half was very much ready for our return! It was then pretty much time to get set for dinner and bedtime as both boys were tired!

Sunday came around and the other half needed to clean the fish tank out. Since it’s a two hour job and not one that is easily done when there are children around, I took the boys over to the nearby Country park for a long, long walk. Oscar slept through the whole thing (which was the point as it was nap time!), and it left Zach and I having some wonderful mummy and son time (again like we had the previous day!). It was gorgeous. We walked for two hours, he splashed in puddles, waded through puddles and got covered in mud!

Once we got home, we had some lunch, took the Christmas tree down and then it was time for dinner and bed. And as it was New Years Eve, once they were asleep, we had a cheeky glass of fizz before I was regularly disturbed by Oscar who is having some serious sleep issues at the moment! And for that reason, we were in bed by 22.45. Although Oscar must have known that I secretly (as always) wanted to see in the new year and woke me up at 23.55! Cheeky boy.

And then Monday came around. New Years Day. We were all up pretty early and we watched the London fireworks that we had recorded! Mum was due round at about 11am and we were planning on going out for another walk for Oscar’s nap and so we all got ourselves ready for her arrival. Once she had arrived, we all headed out again to the Country park and had an almost equally long walk as the day before.

This time of year you have to make good of the cold but dry weather when we have it so we absolutely did. And then we headed on home to defrost with a hot drink! And I popped a roast chicken in the oven for our earlier in the day than usual dinner!

Oscar had a 3 hour nap, woke up extremely happy and then as soon as we put him in his highchair for dinner, all hell broke loose and he had meltdown after meltdown after meltdown! It was exhausting for all of us but we somehow got through it, mum headed home at around 5pm and then we were just in countdown until bedtime – I hid out in the bathroom for some of it, giving it a good clean! A bit of peace and quiet whilst the boys were happily playing with Daddy!

And that was our long weekend. The last of the Christmas holidays. Today the other half is back at work, on Thursday Zach is back at school, and if I am honest, I am looking forward to a bit of normality!

Very true – I have just learnt to allow him to get covered in mud now!

Sounds like a fab weekend and new years! Love the pictures of the giant chair, looks fun! You are lucky to escape the fish tank clean out, I used to have to do mine – not pleasant! 🙂
    Happy new year! 🙂

It looks like a truly unpleasant job and one which consists of moving heavy buckets of water around the house! I’d definitely rather look after the kids for those two hours!
